CAREER EPISODE NARRATIVES

Career Episode – I

Introduction CE 1.1

I had successfully completed the Civil Engineering Degree course from an international standard University, named as University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. The course period was four years from October 2001 to January 2006, and it was a full time course conducted in English medium. I had specialized in the field of Civil Engineering and obtained honours degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

Background CE 1.2

I had acquired knowledge in a most Advanced Engineering Degree which was totally prepared and taught by High Literate Professors and Lecturers in the University of Peradeniya. The course was scheduled to include whole range of Engineering and Engineering Practice with Engineering Designs, Experiments, Coursework Assignments, Project Works, Industrial Trainings, Field Classes and Trips, Surveying Camps and other necessary activities as well as high standard Lectures. International Standard Codes of Practise for designs, well-known sophisticated Engineering Equipments and Machineries and standard approaches for various Engineering activities were introduced in the University. Not only Engineering but also Industrial Law and Management were taught to students to provide an outstanding industrial knowledge. CE 1.2.1

All Civil Engineering Designs (Structural Designs, Environmental Engineering Designs, Irrigation Designs and Geotechnical Designs) were taught to the Undergraduates at the relevant Departments to provide a wide knowledge in Engineering Designs. Each design class was scheduled to cover-up a whole academic year and contains more than a design. CE 1.2.2

For the experiments period, all undergraduates were divided into small groups such as, three or four members in each group. Every experiment was assigned to each group for a time length of three hours and was conducted by one instructor. Those particular experiments would normally be taken the same Instructor to all Undergraduates. The instructor made correction and evaluation of course work reports of respective experiments. CE 1.2.3

In my Bachelor’s Degree program, Faculty of Engineering accepted me to undergo an industrial training to improve my technical skill on construction activities. So I selected K.K.R Builders (pvt) Ltd and Tudawe Brothers (pvt) Ltd at Sri Lank and worked at both companies for six months as a full time undergraduate trainee Engineer. CE 1.2.4

Personal Workplace Activities CE 1.3

Other than Formal Academic activities briefly mentioned in background, my special activities and achievements are briefly given below. I was a Committee Member of Civil Engineering Society (CES) for the academic year 2005/2006. During this period an Engineering Annual Magazine was released in CES Annual Seminar 2005 and a get together of all Engineers called ‘Vortex 2005’ also conducted. CE 1.3.1

I undertook an Undergraduate research project ‘Development of Road Accident Management System” under the supervision of Dr.G.S.Gurusinghe in the final year. AutoCAD, ArcView, MS Access and Visual Basic were used to the project.

As well as, I took a Multi-Disciplinary Design Project ‘Mini Hydro Power Plant’ under the supervision of Dr.A.P.N.Somaratna, Dr.I.M.S.Sathyaprasad, and Dr.K.D.W.Nandalal in the final year.

Moreover, I followed Foundation Engineering, Computer Aided Structural Design, Concrete Technology, Irrigation Engineering, Construction Planning and Advanced Structural Design as Technical Elective courses. As well as, I followed ‘Rural Economic Development’ and ‘The Engineer in Society’ as General Elective courses. In former course, methods of Finite Element Analysis and Engineering Design tools ‘StaadPro’, ‘Prokon’, ‘Plaxis’ and “Etabs” were taught, so that I could learn latest software in structural Engineering and techniques in Finite Element Analysis.

I got industrial training in K.K.R Builders (pvt) Ltd and Tudawe Brothers (pvt) Ltd at Sri Lank for total of six months. Therefore I gained knowledge about different managements and field knowledge in High Rise Buildings. CE 1.3.2

In Design classes, I participated in Structural designs in third and final year. I took design of a high rise building for third year and design of water retaining structures and design of pre-cast bridges for final year. Moreover, I presented (explanation of methodology) the topic ‘Method of moment redistribution and develop bending moment and shear force envelop diagrams to calculate the design ultimate bending moment and shear force’, in the presence of group of Senior Staff and Instructors who involved in Design of High Rice Building Classes.

Other than Structural Designs, I involved in Water Resources Engineering Design also in final year. In this series, I presented (explanation class) a sub title calculate and derive necessary data of a dam and spillway in order to develop hydra-graph and find ‘peak reduction’ and ‘lack time’ in a part of topic ‘methods and calculation associate with flood routing’ as usual in the presence of Staffs. CE 1.3.3

I participated in many experimental classes also which are briefly described below.

Impact and Hardness Test: To test Toughness and Hardness of different materials with different apparatus at different conditions.

Design of Concrete Mixes: To prepare a Concrete mix with given (target) compressive strength. I should calculate the proportion of all materials and amount of water, then prepared enough mix. Finally, I should do necessary tests in the same day and cube tests after 7 and 28 days curing, to confirm characters of the Concrete mix.

Tensile Testing: To test tensile strength of different material and also measure other physical parameters, due to the changes such as percentage reduction and elongation. CE 1.3.4

Further, I participated in surveying field classes. In those sessions, Traverse and Contour Surveying and Levelling were taught to me. Traverse includes chain surveying, angle measurement and band tape measurements, and contour surveying includes tachometry and grid surveying. I learned and trained to handle several instrument, which were used in above fields and taught techniques related to plotting traverses and contours CE 1.3.5

.

As the initial step of my training, I took all structural drawings, layouts, site investigation reports and studied all. In doing so, I understood the entire outline of the project. Here I applied my technical drawing and design skill, which I had learnt in my civil engineering in subjects like Engineering Drawing and concrete Design , to thoroughly understand various design aspects of projects.

I calculated the quantities of steel, concrete, cement, sand, aggregates etc that was going to be required for the present month and the coming next two months. In order to complete this I studied the schedule plan prepared by consultant and contractors and listed out the activities of the project to be completed in the particular months. Using that information I calculated the quantities as per the details in the drawings which were available on the site. I applied my knowledge in the subjects of quantity surveying and Estimation to complete the task. After calculating the necessary quantities, I submitted them to our PM. This helped to him to approve the correct demand of steel and other materials required on site.

There were around 25 workers working on the site in our company. Due to the nature of the site, safety was a maj
